Nieuwjaar!

En dit wordt dus de laatste post van het jaar 2008.
Om 24:00 uur zal een nieuw jaar van start gaan, dan moet ik weer even wennen bij het opschrijven of typen van een datum, het is niet meer 2008 maar 2009!

Ik wens aan iedereen die hier langs komt een geweldig en gelukkig nieuwjaar!

Het nieuwjaar gaan we tegemoet met een liedje van de groep ABBA.

Tweede Kerstdag

Voor tweede kerstdag heb ik gekozen voor de kerst evergreen van Andy Williams, It's the most wonderful time of the Year.

Andy Williams is een levende muzikaal legende, hij werd geboren als Howard Andrew Williams op 3 december 1927 in Wall Lake (Iowa). Op zijn naam staan maar liefst 18 gouden en 3 platina albums.

Hij heeft onder anderen gezongen met Bobby Darin, Ray Charles, Elton John, Ella Fitzgerald, Simon and Garfunkel, Mama Cass en Michael Jackson.

Hij had van 1962 tot 1971 zijn eigen TV show, die overigens heel populair was in Amerika. Daarnaast is hij eigenaar van de Moon River theatre in Branson (Missouri) waar hij nog in 2006 een optreden heeft gegeven. Verder heeft hij in een zestal films gespeeld van 1944 t/m 1964.

Zijn stem behoort eveneens tot "A Voice of National Treasure", dit was overigens uitgeroepen door de voormalige president, Ronald Reagan.

Hij is ook o.a. bekend als "The King of Hearts, The Emperor of Easy, The Emperor of Class, The Crooning King, The King of Easy Listening, Mr. Moon River en Mr. Christmas"

Band AID - Do they know it's Christmas

En voor de eerste kerstdag heb ik "Do they know it's Christmas", gezongen door diverse Engelse artiesten die op het moment van het uitbrengen nogal in "spotlights" stonden. Ze noemden zich Band AID.

Band Aid was eigenlijk een liefdadigheidsgroep die in 1984 werd opgericht door twee popmuzikanten, namelijk Bob Geldof en Midge Ure. Doelstelling van de band was om geld te inzamelen voor de hongersnood in Ethiopië.

Band AID, de naam al had iets dubbelzinnigs, een aantal musici die om de aandacht van de wereld vroegen voor de hongersnood en tegelijkertijd ook om aan te geven dat dit slechts een druppel water was op een gloeiende plaat.

Het nummer werd door Bob Geldof geschreven en geproduceerd door Midge Ure. Saliant detail is dat het nummer in één dag werd opgenomen. Een regelrechte kerst hit werd, want niet alleen in Engeland stonden ze nr. 1, ook o.a. in Nederland bereiken ze de nr. 1 plaats.

Daarom verdient dit nummer een ereplaats en wel op de eerste kerstdag 2008!

Eerste Kerstdag

Vandaag is het de eerste kerstdag, vandaar de groeten uit Almere voor iedereen die op deze blog komt of langskomt. Maak er een gezellige dag van.
Maar vergeet vooral niet dat het niet voor iedereen kerst is, kerst is niet alleen vandaag of morgen, kerst gaat veel verder dan twee dagen per jaar. Zolang je leeft, gezond bent en omringd wordt door familie en vrienden is het iedere dag kerst ... althans de sfeer.

Bing Crosby - White Christmas

En op nr. 1 vinden we het mooiste kerstnummer ooit (althans voor mij) ... mijn vader had toen de LP van Bing Crosby gekocht en ik heb deze later grijs gedraaid totdat ik hem zelf gekocht heb. Want voor mij is dit "het" kerstalbum dat niet mag ontbreken in je muziek collectie, ook al wordt hij maar één keer per jaar grijs gedraaid.

Hij is de tweede filmacteur en zanger in deze Top 10. Iedereen kent hem als Bing Crosby maar zijn officiële naam was Harry Lillis Crosby, geboren in Washington in 1904.

Zijn grootste hit was "White Christmas", een liedje uit de film "Holiday Inn" uit 1942. Ook heeft Crosby een liefdesduet gezongen met Grace Kelly, "True Love" uit de film "High Society" die naast een Oscarnominatie een evergreen werd. Hij won maar liefst 21 goud met zijn muziekalbums en speelde tussen 1930 en 1960 in meer dan 10 films.

Crosby was een fanatieke golfspeler en stierf tijdens het beoefenen van zijn hobby, na een golf partij in Spanje (1977) stortte hij in mede vanwege zijn hartkwaal. Later werd zijn lichaam overgebracht naar de USA waar hij in Californie werd begraven. Als erkenning voor zijn inzet voor de golfsport werd hij in 1978 postuum in de World Golf Hall of Fame opgenomen.

Wie droomt niet van een "witte" Kerst?
Nou ja, deze Kerst zit het er dat in ieder geval niet in. Aan de andere kant hebben we in Nederland ook genoeg "witte" Kerst gehad. Misschien volgende jaar?

En zo zijn we aan het eind gekomen van mijn persoonlijke top 10. Uiteraard zijn er nog meer kerstliedjes die een plaats in de top 10 verdienen, maar ja, je moet nu eenmaal een keuze maken en dat is niet altijd eenvoudig.

Geniet van dit prachtige kerstlied ... je zou bijna geloven dat de kerstman bestaat!

Dean Martin - Let It Snow

Op nr.2 vinden we de filmacteur en de zanger uit de jaren 50 en 60, Dean Martin. Geboren als Dino Paul Crocetti uit een Italiaanse-Amerikaanse familie in Ohio.

Al op 16-jarige leeftijd verliet Dino zijn school om allerlei baantjes te doorlopen, na zijn naamsverandering kreeg hij succes bij clubs in New York.

Samen met Jerry Lewis maakte hij zijn eerste film "My friend Irma" die een succes werd. Samen zouden ze zo'n 13 films maken. In 1956 ging Dean op solocarrière. Later kreeg Dean ook een eigen televisieprogramma, The Dean Martin Show op NBC.

Vanaf 1970 zou hij alleen maar toneelwerk doen vanwege zijn gezondheid. Dean zou in totaal in 51 films een rol hebben gespeeld voordat hij op 78-jarige leeftijd het leven op 25 december 1995 liet.
Hoe krijg je het voor elkaar om op kerstdag te overlijden, ook filmsterren hebben hier niets over te zeggen.

Maar zijn prachtige kerstliedjes zullen wij nog lang horen en ze mogen er zijn, ik koos voor "Let it snow / Winter Wonderland".

WHAM - Last Christmas

En deze week komt de top 3 aan de beurt, te beginnen met de nr. 3.
Daar vinden we de Engelse pop-duo Wham! uit de jaren 80. Wham! bestond uit de vrienden George Michael (geboren als Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou) en Andrew Ridgeley en de achtergrond zangeressen Pepsi & Shirlie.

Tussen 1982 en 1986 heeft Wham! een aantal grote hits scoorde, in Nederland zelfs twee nr. 1 hits, namelijk "Wake me up before you go go" en "The edge of heaven".

Maar Wham! bracht in 1984 ook een mooie kerstnummer uit, "Last Christmas". Een erg succesvol kerstnummer dat nu al een klassieker is en ieder jaar weer door duizend radiostations wordt gedraaid.

Maar in 1986 kwam er een abrupt eind aan Wham! George Michael begon een succesvolle solocarrière terwijl die van Andrew Ridgeley mislukt was evenals zijn ambities om beroepscoureur en/of filmacteur te worden.

De achtergrondzangeressen Pepsi & Shirlie hebben daarna samen een paar hits gehad, waarvan "Heartache" er een is.

Bianca Ryan - Why Couldn't It Be X-mas Every Day

Op nr. 4 vinden we de tweede zangeres in de top 10, namelijk de 14 jarige Bianca. Bianca Ryan uit (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, geboren op 1 september 1994) is een Amerikaanse zangeres.

Ze won op 11-jarige leeftijd de talentenjacht America's Got Talent op de Amerikaanse televisie. Hierin zong ze zo goed dat ze vaak staande ovaties kreeg van publiek en jury. Zangeres en jurylid Brandy noemde het unbelievable. En dat laatste vind ik ook, zeker als je weet dat ze toen pas twaalf jaar was toen ze haar kerst singel "Why Couldn't It Be Christmas Every Day" uitbracht.
Haar stem is indrukwekkend, mochten sommige zangeressen haar niveau hebben qua stem.

Voor mij is de verhouding leeftijd en stem voldoende om haar zo hoog te plaatsen en daarnaast vind ik het een prachtige tekst en melodie.

Mariah Carey - All I Want For Christmas Is You

En de eerste vrouw in de top 10 vinden we op nr. 5, namelijk de Amerikaanse zangeres Mariah Carey, geboren in long Island, New York in 1970.

Nadat ze haar diploma op de high school had gehaald, verhuisde Martiah naar New York om zo haar kansen als zangeres te vergroten. Om aan geld te komen had ze diverse baantjes. Zo werkte ze een korte periode in een kapperswinkel.

Uiteindelijk via via kreeg een haar eerste platencontract. Er werd veel aandacht en geld gestoken in het eerste album van Mariah Carey. Door SONY Music werd ze neergezet als de blanke Whitney Houston. En nu is ze een van de best verkopende vrouwelijk artiesten aller tijden .

In 1994 maakt ze haar eerste kerstalbum en er gingen maar liefst 16 miljoen exemplaren over de toonbank. Het album zit vol met bekende traditionele kerstliederen op drie stuks na, die ze zelf schreef, waaronder "All I Want for Chistmas Is You".
Merkwaardig genoeg kwam dit liedje in de Nederlandse top 40 niet verder dan de 5de plek.

Toch blijft het voor mij een verfrissende en klassieke onder de kerstliederen van de laatste tijd.

Queen - Thank God It's Christmas

Op nr. 6 vinden we de Engelse rockgroep Queen.

De band die vanaf 1970 actief is, is hedendaags niet meer wat het was.
Na het overlijden van de lead zanger Freddie Mercury in 1991 heeft de bassist John Deacon de band verlaten.

De andere twee leden gitarist/zang Brian May en drummer/zang Roger Taylor zijn samen met Paul Rodgers verder gegaan met Queen onder de niets zeggende naam Queen + Paul Rodgers.

Freddie Mercury was Queen en zonder hem geen Queen. Freddie werd officieel als Farrokh Bulsara in Zanzibar (een eiland aan de oostkust van Afrika, dat deel uitmaakt van Tanzania) geboren, zijn verschijning, zijn stemgeluid waren uniek.
Queen maakte niet alleen hard rock
Wereldwijd heeft Queen meer dan 300 miljoen albums verkocht en hun optreden tijdens de Live Aid in 1985 werd in 2005 verkozen tot het beste live optreden aller tijden.

Toen zij dit kerstnummer uitbrachten in 1984 dachten zijn fans: "Thank God it's Queen."
En waarvoor moeten we uiteindelijk God bedanken?
Voor Kerstmis of voor Queen?
